How bad is the winter in Chicago for a Floridian?

This question is mainly for Floridians that are now residing in Chicago. How bad is the winter for you? Is it just cold or really cold? I'm guessing that you would dress in layers. Is there anything i should know to be prepared for winter in Chicago?
the thought of such cold weather terrifies me. oh and what about galoshes do i wear these with or without shoes?

I have lived in the Chicago land area all my life (47 years).

We have funny things about the weather here near the "windy city":
**if you don't like the weather...give it 15 minutes (it will change)
**if you are near the lake (Michigan) it is warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer...not by much...but there is a difference

As for winters...there has been times, in the past several years that it has been colder in Chicago than in Anchorage Alaska...But also notice the winters in other closer states...everything is changing

Dressing in Layers is smart and you can wear galoshes (over shoes) or just winter boots and carry your shoes in a bag or purse.

I will not lie...sometimes, not very ofter, but is gets very cold here...cars have trouble starting and there is a wind chill that is terrible on your face and hands...But you just get used to it. Get a good, heavy winter coat, maybe another for cooler weather...boots, hats, scarf and several pairs of gloves or mittens.
