What kind of socks do women wear under knee high boots to keep their jeans from being bulky underneath?

Even with skinny jeans or legging jeans, I noticed that my jeans are always bulky under my knee high boots. I noticed that a lot of women are wearing these knee high socks to keep them from looking so bulky. What kind of socks are these? I would ask when I see women wearing them, but I am kind of embarrassed to ask a stranger.
