Rain Snow
During the winter, do I need to water perennials I planted this year in an area they will not get rain/snow?
I live in Chicago area, I planted some flowers this year in a bed with a large roof overhang, where little, or any, snow and rain will get them over the winter. Do I need to provide water in the winter months, or will they survive just going dormant?
Drying out over winter will kill a plant just as well as it will during the growing season. Water the plants well before the ground freezes. Once you get some snow, just shovel some snow over the plants and that will not only give them the moisture they need, but it will also protect them from the cold winds that can dessicate plants.
