Why is tan skin considered sexy and pale skin unattractive?

It all depends on your culture. Pale skin was considered to be attractive in previous centuries. It showed your social status. If you were pale and chubby, it meant you were wealthy and didn't have to do hard labor. In the early 1900s Coco Chanel reversed the view. She made a tan seem attractive because it showed you could travel the world and lounge on the beach. Today the Western culture still considers tan to be attractive. Some people think it shows a healthy complexion rather than a sickly pallor of a person that gets no sun, or that it makes you look thinner.
